False memories ‘can be implanted’
February 19, 2003
FALSE memories can be implanted with astonishing ease, scientists have discovered.
The findings highlight the unreliability of recovered memories retrieved later in life, such as child abuse.
Psychologist Professor Elizabeth Loftus told a London conference she had shown volunteers a fake advertisement describing a visit to Disneyland where they would meet Bugs Bunny.
About a third of the volunteers claimed they remembered the event when they were children - even though Bugs Bunny is a Warner Brothers character and has never appeared at Disneyland.

They did the same test on me, and all I can remember was some guy showing me a crappy advertisement trying to drum up business for Disneyland. What a croc!
Now where did that Limited Edition Bugs Bunny toy go that I got when I was younger, when I went to Florida for a holiday with my family . . .
